The air has a fresh crisp, the leaves are just about to change, and Starbucks has started making pumpkin spice lattes….. Don’t act like you don’t love pumpkin flavored things in the fall!
The perfect way to celebrate fall is to get outside! Take advantage of the pleasant weather before you need snow boots and a coat. There might not be crunchy leaves to step on, but venturing outside the house is worth it! Lucky for you, the Avenues neighborhood has been celebrating Fall the right way since 1978. We’re talking about the Avenues Street Fair! Held every year on the second Saturday of September, and loved by the thousands who attend.
It all started in the Fall of 1978 when many folks in Utah wanted to check out the Avenues. People were coming to the Avenues for antique sales, home tours, and exciting parties. Vendors came together, and Voila! The street fair was born. We can see why everyone was interested, the Avenues have always had so much character! You can learn more about them by checking out our article on the neighborhood, here. Did you know it was the first official neighborhood of Salt Lake City?
Every year they feature a talented local artist to support. This year it’s Caroleine James, a student at West High School. She is young but experienced, winning many awards and successfully selling her art at previous fairs. How cool is that?
If you have kiddos, listen up. A children's parade begins at 9am! Be at the corner of North Street and 6th Avenue, and prepare for some fun! Kids are welcome to bike, ride scooters, and even walk leashed pets! There is no registration and everyone is welcome. On the South side of Sixth Avenue kids can continue the fun with games, a sand box, bubbles and arts and crafts. And yes, it’s all free!
Make sure you check out the People’s Art Gallery. Art pieces done by amazing artists of all ages in the community will be on display. Anyone can vote for their favorites, and yes, prizes included. Go fight for your favorite local artist!
Are you a live music lover? There are two stages for live performances, and two great lists of lineups. Enjoy rockin’ bands like White Fire, All Hope Contained, Oskar & Julia, William Klinger, The Spectacles, and Brown Dog Band of the East Stage (located at 6th Avenue and North Street) Or enjoy the melodies of Wasatch Music Academy, The Performer Studio, Music Garage Band, Phoenix Jazz Band, Lake Effect, and Atomic Army and the Spent Rods at the East Stage (located at 6th Avenue and I Street) Is there anything more fun than live music?
Well, prizes are pretty fun too. For every dollar donated to the Greater Avenues Community Council will get you get a raffle ticket for a cool prize from local businesses and vendors. By donating to the community you get a chance to win free stuff. Now that’s what we call charity!
The party comes to a close at 6pm. See you there!
